What the research says

There is evidence for the people side of the work.

For individual engineers: A review of research on practicing engineers found that career satisfaction and promotion were the most frequently reported outcomes of mentoring. That supports mentoring as a way to navigate growth and career decisions; it does not promise a promotion.

For organizations: A 2023 review of 11 workplace-coaching studies found an overall positive effect on workplace outcomes, including skills and employee experience. That is evidence that coaching can help people grow at work—not a guaranteed revenue, retention, or productivity figure.

For infrastructure projects: A construction study found that shared goals and effective communication were associated with schedule performance, quality, and client satisfaction. It studied project-team practices, not coaching as the cause of those results.
